What’s the science behind one of our hero ingredients, Hyaluronic Acid (HA) (C28H44N2O23)?
The structure of hyaluronic acid is remarkable in its ability to hold ~1000x times its weight of water. The permeability of HA is primarily linked to its molecular weight. High molecular weight HA (>600 kDa) has limited permeability through the skin mostly staying on the skin surface, forming a thin protective hydration layer. Low molecular weight HA is able to permeate to the stratum corneum, epidermis, and even the deeper dermal layers.

1) Daily application of topical HA-infused cream resulted in improvement in skin elasticity and tightness by 13–30%, significant reduction in wrinkle depth by 10–20%, and improved hydration levels in patients (Bukari, 2018).
2) There are HA receptors locating on the cell surfaces, and HA can facilitate transdermal delivery (Brown and Jones, 2005). For example, after joining human growth hormone (hGH) with HA, the bioavailability increased from 1.53 ± 1.79% to 15.9 ± 1.38% as compared to topical delivery of hGH by itself (Yang et al., 2012). This has important implications for active delivery (say in serums), as the presence of HA facilitates the delivery of active ingredients to the skin.
3) Skin rejuvenation and anti-wrinkle effects produced by the application/administration of HA is due to its ability to stimulate collagen synthesis via induction of fibroblasts in the dermis (Kincks et al., 1998). The increased production of collagen makes skin smoother, reduce wrinkles, and improve skin elasticity and longevity.
